Lionel Messi Set to Extend Inter Miami Stay, Likely to Feature at New Stadium in 2026

Lionel Messi looks set to extend his stay at Inter Miami, with talks over a new deal reportedly in advanced stages. According to The Athletic, sources close to the negotiations say both sides are confident of reaching an agreement soon, which would see the Argentine superstar remain with the MLS club through the opening of their new stadium in 2026.

Messi originally signed with Inter Miami in July 2023, joining on a contract that runs until the end of 2025. But it now appears he may stick around longer — a huge boost for both the club and Major League Soccer. Messi has been a game-changer since his arrival, instantly turning Inter Miami into one of the league’s biggest draws and title contenders.

Club managing owner Jorge Mas, who’s played a central role in the negotiations, recently hinted at a positive outcome. Speaking on FDP Radio Miami, Mas said, “The stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s solely his decision. My hope has always been, and everything we’re doing, is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026.”

That new venue, Miami Freedom Park, is expected to be ready in time for the 2026 season. For now, the team continues to play home matches at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Messi, who will turn 38 this summer, isn’t slowing down anytime soon. He finished last season as Inter Miami’s joint-top scorer with 20 goals and helped them claim the Supporters’ Shield. Although the club fell short in the playoffs, Messi’s influence has been undeniable.

So far in the 2025 MLS season, he’s started brightly again — three goals and two assists in just three league appearances, plus five more goals in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. That includes a brace in the quarterfinal win over LAFC. Inter Miami are set to face Vancouver Whitecaps in the Champions Cup semifinals later this month. Before that, they’ll look to extend their unbeaten league run when they travel to face Chicago Fire on Sunday.
