Australia's Champions Trophy semifinal hopes have taken a hit, with opener Matthew Short likely to miss the crucial clash against either India or New Zealand due to a quad injury. Short picked up the knock late in Afghanistan’s innings during their rain-affected match, and while he still managed to open the batting alongside Travis Head, it was clear he wasn’t at full fitness.
Struggling to run between the wickets, Short relied heavily on boundaries before falling for 20 off 15 balls in a brisk opening stand of 44 in just 4.3 overs. After the match, skipper Steve Smith didn’t sound optimistic about Short’s chances of recovering in time. "I think he'll be struggling," Smith admitted. "We saw tonight he wasn't moving very well. It’s probably going to be too quick between games for him to recover." With Short all but ruled out, Australia may turn to Jake Fraser-McGurk – who himself was only brought in as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh. Other options include all-rounder Aaron Hardie, who could slot in if the team reshuffles the batting order. "We've got a few guys who can step up, and we'll be able to fill a job," Smith added confidently.

Short’s absence wouldn’t just be a blow to the batting lineup but also to Australia’s bowling attack. The part-time off-spinner was highly effective against Afghanistan, conceding just 21 runs in his seven-over spell. If Australia needs another spin option, they could call on travelling reserve Cooper Connolly, though the likes of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne – who bagged two wickets against England – could also step in if required.
Injuries have already plagued Australia throughout this tournament, with key players like Marsh (back), Pat Cummins (ankle), Josh Hazlewood (hip), and Mitchell Starc (ankle) all dealing with fitness concerns. Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement, further depleting the squad’s depth. With a semifinal showdown looming, Australia faces some tough selection calls as they aim to overcome yet another setback.
