With Delhi Capitals set to kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants, the big question remains – will KL Rahul take the field? Despite joining the team in Visakhapatnam, his availability for the match is still up in the air. DC captain Axar Patel remained non-committal about Rahul’s availability, citing personal reasons as the deciding factor.
KL Rahul, who previously captained LSG, is expecting his first child with wife Athiya Shetty, which could keep him out of this much-anticipated clash. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Axar admitted that DC is still waiting for a final decision. "Obviously, he joined the team," Axar said when asked about Rahul’s status. "We don't know yet (if he'll play). Right now, we don't know if he is available or not. So, if he comes back, we ask him if he is okay, and we'll let you know tomorrow morning." Adding to the suspense, DC’s new head coach, Hemang Badani, declined to reveal Rahul’s batting position, saying fans would have to "wait and watch" until Monday.
While Rahul’s situation remains uncertain, Axar is focused on his new role as DC’s captain, taking over for the first time in a full IPL season. Having been with the franchise since 2019, he sees this as a huge step in his journey. "I have been playing for this franchise since 2019, and it has played a huge role in my growth as a cricketer. Being entrusted with the captaincy is a great honor for me," Axar said.
Delhi, still chasing their first IPL title in 17 years, made a bold call by handing the captaincy to Axar over more experienced leaders like Rahul and Faf du Plessis. Whether this decision pays off remains to be seen, but for now, all eyes are on whether Rahul takes the field against his former team.
