The Orange Army enters a new era! With Pat Cummins sidelined due to a back injury, Ishan Kishan has been named the standing captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the start of IPL 2026. Supporting him is the explosive Abhishek Sharma as Vice-Captain. This dynamic duo will lead SRH into their high-voltage season opener against defending champions RCB on March 28 at the Chinnaswamy.
The Orange Army is heading into IPL 2026 with a fresh, dynamic leadership duo. Following the news that regular skipper Pat Cummins will miss the opening matches due to a lingering back injury, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has officially handed the captaincy to the explosive Ishan Kishan.
In an equally exciting move, the franchise has named local sensation Abhishek Sharma as the Vice-Captain, creating a young, all-Indian leadership core for the season's first phase.
The decision to appoint Ishan Kishan as the standing captain isn't just a temporary fix; it's a strategic move backed by his recent stellar form. Kishan recently led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, finishing as the tournament's highest run-getter with 517 runs.
His ability to lead from the front, combined with his high-octane performance in India's recent T20 World Cup triumph, makes him the perfect candidate to steer SRH. As a wicketkeeper-captain, Kishan will have the best seat in the house to manage tactical shifts and bowling changes during the high-pressure opening games.
By naming Abhishek Sharma as Vice-Captain, SRH has solidified their "aggression-first" philosophy. Abhishek is not just a destructive opener; he has significant leadership experience, having led Punjab in domestic cricket and the India U19 side.
Together, the Kishan-Abhishek duo is the league's most feared opening pair. Their synergy at the top of the order will now translate into the dressing room, ensuring that SRH maintains its "no-fear" brand of cricket even in the absence of their regular leader.
The regular captain, Pat Cummins, is currently recovering from a lumbar bone stress injury sustained during the Ashes. While he is expected to join the squad later in the tournament, the BCCI and SRH medical teams are taking a cautious approach.
"Pat Cummins will miss a few games while recovering. Until then, Ishan Kishan will lead, and Abhishek Sharma will be his deputy," the franchise confirmed in a recent statement.
The "Orange Army" may be missing its Australian spearhead, but with Captain Kishan and Vice-Captain Abhishek leading the charge, the sun is shining brighter than ever on Hyderabad.
