Founded on January 9, 1900, by nine sports enthusiasts led by Luigi Bigiarelli, Lazio originally started as a multi-sport club with a focus on athletics. The football section was established a few years later, and Lazio quickly gained prominence in the Italian football scene. Lazio’s early years were marked by regional successes, but it wasn’t until 1929 that the club officially entered Serie A. In the following decades, Lazio oscillated between the top and second tiers, never quite achieving the level of success their fierce city rivals, AS Roma, enjoyed.

The club’s fortunes changed dramatically in 1974 when Lazio won their first-ever Serie A title under the guidance of coach Tommaso Maestrelli. The team, led by iconic figures like Giorgio Chinaglia, was known for its grit and unity. Lazio’s second golden era came in the late 1990s and early 2000s under the ownership of Sergio Cragnotti. This period saw the club heavily invest in world-class talent like Alessandro Nesta, Pavel Nedvěd, and Juan Sebastián Verón. The pinnacle of this era was winning the 1999-2000 Serie A title and the Coppa Italia. Lazio also triumphed in Europe, winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1999.

However, financial struggles in the mid-2000s led to a period of instability. Lazio regrouped and found new success in the 2010s, winning multiple Coppa Italia trophies. Lazio’s most recent Coppa Italia victory came in 2019. Furthermore, they have constantly finished near the top of the Serie A standings, which means that Lazio have become a near-permanent presence in European competitions.
