2018 FIFA World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann has decided to retire from international football. The 33-year-old superstar announced his decision to retire via his social media handles.
In an emotional farewell video, Griezmann said, “Today, it is with deep emotion that I'm announcing my retirement as a player of the France team," the Atletico Madrid player said on social media. After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation. Wearing this jersey was an honor and a privilege." One of the most trusted lieutenants during Didier Deschamps reign as the head coach of French football team, Griezmann played a key role in France’s deep runs during the 2016 Euros, 2018 and 2022 World Cup. In fact, he was the top scorer at 2016 Euros, when France made it to the final, only to be defeated by Portugal at Stade de France.
Antoine Griezmann made his debut for Les Bleus in March 2014 during a friendly match against Netherlands. A decade later, the 33-year-old attacker retires as one of the most accomplished French footballers ever. Griezmann has won 137 caps for France, while scoring 44 goals. Unsurprisingly, Griezmann’s tally of 44 goals makes him the fourth highest scorer for France, only behind the likes of Oliver Giroud, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe. While his scoring numbers are impressive, Griezmann was more than just a poacher. During his 10-year stint with Les Bleus, Griezmann played a variety of roles across the midfield and attack. Griezmann’s versatility was so important to Deschamps’ setup that he once played a French record 84 consecutive games for France.
With Antoine Griezmann hanging up his boots, French football is officially entering a new chapter. Much of the 2018 World Cup-winning squad has already stepped away from the international stage—key figures like Hugo Lloris, Raphaël Varane, Samuel Umtiti, Blaise Matuidi, Steve Mandanda, Paul Pogba, and Olivier Giroud have all retired. This new generation of Les Bleus will be spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe, who was just 19 when France lifted the World Cup. With Griezmann now out of the picture, Mbappe is unquestionably the focal point of the team. However, the big question remains—can he step up and lead France in the same way Griezmann did for so long? Only time will tell if Mbappe can truly fill those massive shoes.
