Top 5 Most Expensive Signings of 2025 Winter Transfer Window

The 2025 winter transfer window was nothing short of a spectacle, with clubs across the globe splashing out record sums to bolster their squads. So, let's dive into the top five most expensive signings of this window.

1) Jhon Durán: Aston Villa to Al Nassr (€77 million)

The biggest deal of the window saw Colombian striker Jhon Durán make a blockbuster move from Aston Villa to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr for a staggering €77 million. At just 21 years old, Durán has been one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe, combining raw physicality with a knack for scoring spectacular goals. His performances in the Premier League and the Champions League had already put him on the radar of top clubs, but it was Al Nassr who won the race for his signature.

For Al Nassr, this signing is a statement of intent. Already boasting Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, the Saudi club is clearly building a team capable of dominating both domestically and in Asian competitions. Durán’s arrival adds a dynamic, youthful edge to their attack, and his partnership with Ronaldo could be one of the most intriguing storylines of the season.

For Aston Villa, the sale represents a significant financial win. While losing a player of Durán’s potential is a blow, the €77 million fee gives them the resources to reinvest in their squad. Manager Unai Emery will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen other areas of the team as they continue their push for European football.

2) Omar Marmoush: Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City (€75 million)

Manchester City’s pursuit of Omar Marmoush was one of the most talked-about sagas of the transfer window. The Egyptian forward had been in scintillating form for Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring goals and providing assists at an impressive rate. His versatility, ability to play across the front line, and knack for performing in big games made him a prime target for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The €75 million deal is a testament to Marmoush’s rapid rise. Just a few years ago, he was a relatively unknown prospect; now, he’s one of the most expensive African players of all time. For Manchester City, this signing is a strategic move to bolster their attacking options as they aim to regain the form that made them the treble winner during the 2022/23 season.

3) Khvicha Kvaratskhelia: Napoli to Paris Saint-Germain (€70 million)

Georgian sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's move from Napoli to Paris Saint-Germain for €70 million was one of the window's most talked-about transfers. During his tenure in Serie A, Kvaratskhelia quickly becoming a fan favorite because of his direct style of play and amazing trickery. Therefore, his transition to PSG is anticipated to add a new dimension to their attack, especially with the club's ongoing quest for European glory. Pairing him with the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola promises a mouth-watering prospect for supporters and a daunting challenge for defenders.

For Napoli, losing Kvaratskhelia is a significant blow. However, the €70 million fee provides them with the funds to reinvest in their squad and continue their rebuild under new management. As for Kvaratskhelia, the move to PSG represents a new chapter in his career, and all eyes will be on him to see if he can replicate his Serie A form in Ligue 1 and on the European stage.

4) Nico González: FC Porto to Manchester City (€60 million)

Manchester City were busy in the winter window, and their fourth major signing was Porto’s Nico González. The Spanish midfielder has been a standout performer in the Primeira Liga. The €60 million deal underscores City’s commitment to strengthening their midfield. With Kevin De Bruyne entering the latter stages of his career and questions surrounding the future of Bernardo Silva, González represents a long-term investment. At just 23 years old, he has the potential to become a mainstay in City’s midfield for years to come.

However, it’s not all dome and gloom for Porto fans, as the sale of Gonzalez could help the club in the long run. While losing a player of González’s quality is never easy, the substantial fee will allow them to reinvest in their squad and continue their tradition of developing young talent. For González, the move to Manchester City is a dream come true, and he’ll be eager to prove himself on one of the biggest stages in world football.

5) Xavi Simons: Paris Saint-Germain to RB Leipzig (€50 million + €30 million in add-ons)

Xavi Simons’ permanent move to RB Leipzig was one of the more intriguing deals of the window. The Dutch midfielder had already been on loan at Leipzig from PSG, and his performances in the Bundesliga convinced the German club to make the move permanent for €50 million, with an additional €30 million in potential add-ons. Simons’ rise has been nothing short of remarkable. After leaving Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy for PSG, he struggled to break into the first team. However, his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven reignited his career.

Since making the switch to Germany, Xavi Simons has elevated his game to another level. Since joining Leipzig at the start of the 2023/24 season, he’s been a revelation, racking up 12 goals and 13 assists in just 44 Bundesliga appearances. With those kinds of numbers, it’s no surprise that locking him down on a permanent deal became Leipzig’s top priority.

For Leipzig, securing Simons on a permanent deal is a coup. The 21-year-old has already become a fan favorite, and his partnership with fellow young talents like Benjamin Šeško and Lois Openda promises to be one of the most exciting in European football. For PSG, the sale represents a missed opportunity, but the significant fee will help them balance the books as they look to rebuild.
