3 of the Most Iconic Dimitar Berbatov Moments as the Iceman Turns 44

Whether he was gliding past defenders, producing ridiculous bits of skill, or finishing with the precision of a world-class marksman, Berbatov always made football look easy. A striker with an artist’s touch, he played the game at his own pace, rarely breaking a sweat but almost always dictating the flow in the final third.

As the Bulgarian maestro turns 44, it’s only fitting to celebrate his career by revisiting three of his most iconic moments—the kind that defined his legacy and cemented his reputation as one of the most technically gifted forwards of his generation.

1) THAT Hat-Trick Against Liverpool (2010)

There are hat-tricks, and then there’s Berbatov’s masterclass against Liverpool on 19th September 2010. A day that will forever be remembered by Manchester United fans as the moment when Berbatov truly announced himself as a big-game player at Old Trafford. The Bulgarian had already established himself as a classy forward, but this was the performance that turned him into a cult hero. Facing Liverpool at Old Trafford, Berbatov delivered a sensational hat-trick to sink Liverpool in a 3-2 win.

His first goal was a classic striker’s header, rising above the Liverpool defense to nod home from a Ryan Giggs corner. But it was the second goal that stole the headlines—a moment of sheer brilliance. With his back to goal, Berbatov controlled a Nani cross with his thigh before executing an outrageous overhead kick. The ball looped over Pepe Reina and crashed into the net via the underside of the crossbar. Even neutral fans couldn’t help but applaud the sheer audacity and technique behind the strike.

Liverpool fought back through a Steven Gerrard brace, but Berbatov wasn’t done yet. With 10 minutes to go, he completed his hat-trick, rising high to head home John O’Shea’s cross and seal a dramatic victory. That day, Berbatov became the first United player to score a hattrick against Liverpool in 64 years, and it elevated Berbatov from a talented forward to a United icon. His performance that day epitomized everything great about him – grace, intelligence, and an unshakable sense of calm in the biggest moments.

2) The Outrageous Assist vs West Ham (2008)

Most strikers are judged on goals, but Berbatov was never just about scoring—he was an artist. If ever a single moment summed up his genius, it was his astonishing assist for Cristiano Ronaldo against West Ham in 2008. The game was played at Old Trafford, and United were hunting down another Premier League title. In the 29th minute, Berbatov received the ball near the byline, seemingly trapped with little room to maneuver. Most players would have played it safe, perhaps cutting the ball back to a teammate. But Berbatov wasn’t an ordinary player.

With one elegant movement, he executed an audacious pirouette, dragging the ball past James Collins and leaving the West Ham defender completely bewildered. In the same motion, he then rolled a pinpoint pass across the face of goal for Cristiano Ronaldo to tap in. The assist was a masterpiece – a blend of vision, skill, and sheer audacity that very few players could even dream of producing.

United went on to win 2-0 that day, and while Ronaldo grabbed the headlines with his goals, it was Berbatov’s assist that stole the show. It was the kind of moment that defined his career – not just about scoring, but about creating, about making football look like an art form. This was Berbatov at his best: a magician with the ball at his feet, capable of unlocking defenses with pure elegance.

3) The Five-Goal Performance vs Blackburn (2010)

If Berbatov’s hat-trick against Liverpool showcased his big-game mentality, then his five-goal haul against Blackburn on 27th November 2010 was a ruthless display of finishing at its finest. Manchester United demolished Blackburn Rovers 7-1, and Berbatov was at the heart of everything, producing a performance so dominant that it earned him a place in the record books. He became only the fourth player in Premier League history to score five goals in a single match – joining an elite group that included Andy Cole, Alan Shearer, and Jermain Defoe at the time (Sergio Agüero and Erling Haaland have since joined that list).

On that day, Berbatov scored goals in every possible way:

  • The first was a simple tap-in after an error from Pascal Chimbonda.
  • The second came via a well-placed finish after a sweeping United counterattack.
  • The third was peak Berbatov – a delicate first touch followed by a lethal strike past Paul Robinson.
  • The fourth came from inside the box as he reacted quickest to a loose ball.
  • And the fifth? A composed finish to round off a truly historic day.

What made this performance even more special was the ease with which he did it. No wild celebrations, no unnecessary drama – just Berbatov doing what he did best, making the game look effortless. This match also highlighted something that often went unnoticed about him – his predatory instincts. He wasn’t just about elegance; when needed, he could be absolutely ruthless in front of goal. His five-goal haul remains one of the most dominant individual performances in Premier League history, and it helped United reclaim the top spot in the table that season.
