Spurs and Manchester United Involved in a Five-Way Race for Bayern Munich Starlet Mathys Tel

With just a few days left in the winter transfer window, clubs are scrambling to wrap up deals before the window slams shut. While the rumor mill is churning out plenty of speculation, one transfer saga that has truly stolen the spotlight is the race for Mathys Tel. The Bayern Munich wonderkid is at the center of a heated five-way battle, with multiple Premier League giants vying for his signature.

The saga kicked off when reports from Germany suggested the young forward was looking for a way out of Bayern Munich due to a lack of game time. Those whispers quickly turned into reality when Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, confirmed Tel had officially asked to leave in January. Speaking on the situation, Eberl revealed, “We spoke in December when Mathys said he wanted to assert himself. Now he has said he wants to leave. He said he wasn't getting enough playing time, which is understandable. Nevertheless, we would have liked him to fight on.”

Chelsea were the first Premier League club to throw their hat in the ring, having monitored Tel since the start of the transfer window. However, if reports are to be believed, the French forward wasn’t keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, as he felt the Blues were already stacked in his preferred position. Once Bayern made Tel’s situation public, the interest exploded. Manchester United, Spurs, Arsenal, and Aston Villa all came knocking. Even Eberl himself seemed taken aback by the level of interest, admitting, “I have rarely seen so many clubs calling about one player.” However, of all the Premier League clubs chasing Mathys Tel, Spurs seem to be pushing the hardest to get the deal done.

Despite their quiet January window, Spurs have made a serious statement by submitting a €60 million bid for the Bayern Munich starlet—an offer that, according to reports, has already been accepted. Initially, Bayern were only open to a loan move for Tel, but the sheer size of Spurs' bid changed their stance, convincing them to sanction a permanent transfer instead. Spurs' sporting director, Johan Lange, was even spotted in the stands during Bayern’s 3-1 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava, a clear indication that the North London club is going all in to secure Tel’s signature. However, the young Frenchman isn’t rushing into a decision just yet.

Reports suggest that Manchester United is his preferred destination, but there’s a catch—the Red Devils are only looking for a loan deal. Having already spent around €35 million to sign Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu, United are hesitant to commit to a big-money move for Tel. That hesitation could give Spurs the upper hand, but there’s still time for twists in this saga.

Elsewhere, Arsenal and Aston Villa seem to be shifting focus. The Gunners made a bold move for Ollie Watkins, launching a £60 million bid, only to see it instantly knocked back by Villa. Meanwhile, Villa themselves are exploring alternatives for Jhon Duran’s replacement, with Joao Felix and Marco Asensio both on their radar. That narrows the race for Tel down to Spurs and Manchester United—unless Arsenal decide to throw their hat back into the ring at the last moment. With their bid for Watkins rejected, don’t be surprised if they come in with a late play for the French teenager.
