Sergio Conceição Poised to Take Over as AC Milan's Head Coach Following Paulo Fonseca’s Dismissal

Things are unraveling quickly at AC Milan. After a disappointing start to the 2024/25 campaign – which sees the Rossoneri stuck in 8th place in Serie A – the club’s management has made the tough call to part ways with Paulo Fonseca. Reports suggest the search for his replacement didn’t take long, with former Porto boss Sergio Conceição already tipped to step into the hot seat at San Siro.

Paulo Fonseca’s journey at AC Milan has come to an abrupt end after just a few months in charge. The Portuguese tactician, who left Lille this summer to succeed Stefano Pioli, signed a three-year deal with high hopes. However, his tenure quickly spiraled out of control, with lackluster performances leaving the Rossoneri in 8th place—eight points adrift of a coveted Champions League spot. A dismal run of form, including just one win in their last four outings, had fans growing restless. The tipping point came with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Roma, a game Fonseca himself admitted beforehand would likely be his last at San Siro.

Speaking to DAZN prior to the game, Fonseca reflected on his mindset, saying, “I never in my life felt fear of anything in football, and I continue like that. The important thing is to have a clear conscience, that I am honest with those who work with me. My conscience is clear, I fear nothing.” It was only after this candid interview that Zlatan Ibrahimović, the iconic club legend and special advisor, delivered the news that the board had decided to part ways with him. For Fonseca, the writing was on the wall, and his words resonated like a final note of defiance in what had been a short-lived and turbulent tenure at Milan.

With Paulo Fonseca shown the exit, AC Milan has wasted no time securing a replacement. Former Porto boss Sérgio Conceição is set to take the reins at the Rossoneri, having agreed to a contract worth €1 million per year until June 2025, with an option to extend through 2026. According to Sky Sports Italia, Conceição is expected to arrive in Milan on Monday to finalize the remaining formalities. His debut as Milan's manager will be nothing short of monumental, as Milan face Juventus during their Supercoppa Italiana semifinals at Riyadh on 3rd January. The 50-year-old tactician has been without a job since parting ways with Porto over the summer, but his track record speaks volumes. During his seven-year tenure at the Portuguese giants, Conceição amassed an impressive 11 trophies, including three Primeira Liga title.
