It’s starting to feel like Rodrygo’s time at Real Madrid is running out. The Brazilian forward was once again left watching from the bench during Real’s heavy 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semifinal, and it’s raised even more questions about where he stands in Xabi Alonso’s plans.
Rodrygo hasn’t started a game since the opening match of the Club World Cup, where he made a good impression by setting up the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal. Since then, he’s seen just 27 minutes of action across five matches and didn’t get off the bench for the third time in a row against PSG. That snub, in such a high-profile clash, has only added fuel to the growing speculation around his future. When asked about Rodrygo’s absence after the PSG game, Alonso gave a short but telling answer. “I didn’t play Rodrygo for a technical decision. We thought we would be better off with other players. It’s not about his future,” he said.
While Alonso tried to downplay the situation, it’s hard not to read between the lines. Saying it’s a “technical decision” sounds harmless, but three benchings in a row tells a different story. Rodrygo had previously shown a willingness to fight for his place, even after his role began to shrink towards the end of the 2024–25 season. The arrival of Alonso initially brought some hope that things would turn around for the 24-year-old, but those hopes are now fading fast. Discussions about his future are expected to take place soon, now that Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign has ended.
Meanwhile, interest in Rodrygo is growing — and not just from any clubs. Arsenal have been keeping a close eye and are said to be seriously considering an €80 million move this summer. The Gunners’ interest is long-standing, but things might get complicated by their pursuit of Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, who has reportedly already agreed to personal terms.
Liverpool are also in the picture. While the Reds aren’t actively looking to sell Luis Diaz, they’re reportedly open to the idea if the right offer comes along — and they’ve already drawn up a contingency plan that includes Rodrygo. Journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims Liverpool are ready to pounce if Diaz moves, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich also showing interest in the Colombian winger.
As for Real Madrid, they won’t let Rodrygo go without a hefty payday. Reports suggest they’ve slapped a €90 million price tag on him, which limits the number of clubs that can afford him. Arsenal and Liverpool are among the few in that bracket, along with Saudi side Al-Nassr. But Rodrygo is said to prefer a move to the Premier League over a switch to the Middle East.
