Newcastle Weigh Move for Benjamin Sesko with Isak’s Future in Doubt

Newcastle United may be forced into the transfer market once again, this time for a potential replacement for Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker’s future at St James’ Park has suddenly become uncertain following reports that he wants to assess his options this summer.

That development has pushed the club to revisit their long-standing interest in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. The 22-year-old Slovenian is high on Newcastle’s list of targets if Isak does leave, though a move would be far from simple. Financially, it’s a stretch, and with interest in Sesko already coming from several big-name clubs, Newcastle would need to act decisively.

According to Sky Sports News, Sesko’s representatives recently turned down a proposal from a Saudi Pro League side, which suggests he’s prioritizing competitive European football over a big-money switch. Arsenal were heavily linked with the Leipzig striker earlier this summer but seem to have shifted their attention toward Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, leaving Newcastle with a clearer path — at least for now.

Sesko signed a new contract with Leipzig just last month, extending his stay until 2029. His previous deal included a release clause around €65 million (£55m), but while that clause may no longer be active, it’s believed there's a gentleman’s agreement in place that would allow him to leave for the right project. Whether Newcastle can convince both the player and Leipzig that their project fits the bill remains to be seen.

The Slovenian forward had another strong campaign last season, notching 21 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions. He’s young, physical, and clinical — qualities that would make him an ideal replacement for Isak, should Newcastle have to go down that road. Still, the Magpies aren’t putting all their eggs in one basket. They’ve also opened talks with Brentford over Yoane Wissa. The Congolese forward is being viewed as a potential backup for Isak or even a replacement for Callum Wilson, who recently left on a free transfer. Wissa may not have the same star potential as Sesko, but he’s proven in the Premier League and would be a more affordable option.

Newcastle’s urgency in the market has grown over the past few weeks, especially after missing out on other attacking targets. Hugo Ekitike ended up joining Liverpool, while Joao Pedro and Liam Delap were snapped up by Chelsea. Those losses have left the club scrambling for alternatives in case Isak pushes for a move away. It’s still unclear where Isak will end up, or if he’ll leave at all. But Newcastle are preparing for the possibility. If the Swede does move on, the club wants to be ready — and Benjamin Sesko could be the man they turn to.
