In a Premier League season which hasn’t panned out as expected, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are two clubs who are challenging the established elite of the division. Who would’ve thought these two would be battling for a Champions League spot? Yet, here they are, shaking up the established order and refusing to fade away.
Most assumed their European dreams would fizzle out as the season progressed, but Forest and Newcastle have stayed in the fight, proving they belong at the top. Now, as the race for the top four intensifies, they’re no longer underdogs – they’re contenders. Having said that, both Newcastle and Forest are guilty of dropping crucial points in their last Premier League match. While the Magpies succumbed to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, Forest suffered a 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage. These losses exposed a harsh reality – despite playing some brilliant football this season, both sides are prone to the occasional disaster-class.
Just last month, Bournemouth put five past Forest in an embarrassing rout. To their credit, Nuno Espírito Santo’s men responded in the most outrageous way possible – demolishing Brighton 7-0 – but the defensive frailties were laid bare. Meanwhile, Newcastle have also hit a bit of a snag in the Premier League. While they are through to the EFL Cup final, their league form over the past month has been abysmal. In their last four Premier League games, the Magpies have lost three games and won just once. However, they will be counting on the raucous Toon Army to propel them to a win over Forest on Sunday at the historic St. James’ Park.
