Newcastle Step Up Pursuit of Anthony Elanga With Improved £55m Bid

Newcastle United are making a serious push to land Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga, having submitted an improved offer worth around £55 million. The Magpies had seen their initial £45 million bid turned down last week, but that hasn’t deterred them. Now, with the new bid on the table, there's growing optimism that a deal can be struck.

Elanga, who impressed for Forest last season, is understood to be intrigued by the project unfolding at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the Swedish international and believes he can add a new dimension to Newcastle’s attack, especially with the club looking to strengthen for another run in Europe.

This isn’t a new interest either. Newcastle’s pursuit of Elanga dates back to last summer, when they made a late offer close to £50 million on deadline day. That move didn’t materialise, but the club have kept tabs on the 23-year-old ever since. Howe reportedly sees Elanga as a priority target and one who fits perfectly into his plans for a younger, faster and more dynamic frontline.

Elanga’s performances under Nuno Espírito Santo last season certainly helped raise his stock. He featured in every Premier League game for Forest, contributing six goals and 11 assists. His attacking output played a key role in helping Forest qualify for the Europa Conference League—marking their return to European football after nearly three decades.

With Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League after finishing fifth, the ambition is clear: build a squad that can compete on multiple fronts. Talks with Forest are ongoing, and while the deal isn't done yet, there’s a sense that both sides are inching closer to an agreement. Forest know they’re dealing with a valuable asset, and they’re playing hardball, but Newcastle’s persistence may soon pay off.

Elanga joined Forest from Manchester United for £15 million two years ago, and that move included a sell-on clause—meaning United could also benefit from this potential transfer. Since arriving at the City Ground, Elanga has made 83 appearances and scored 11 goals, steadily becoming one of Forest’s most influential players.

While Newcastle remain focused on Elanga, they’ve also been weighing up other attacking options. PSV’s Johan Bakayoko, Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus have all been considered as alternatives. But it’s clear that Elanga remains top of the wishlist. Now, with an improved bid on the table and the player reportedly interested in the move, Newcastle will be hoping to get this one over the line sooner rather than later.
