Newcastle and Nottingham Forest Agree Deal for Anthony Elanga

Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest after agreeing a deal that could be worth up to £52 million, with an additional bonus package that may push the figure higher, though those extra payments are considered difficult to trigger. Elanga is expected to sign a five-year deal with the Magpies, with personal terms already agreed and only the finer details left to be ironed out.

The two clubs have been in talks for several days following Newcastle’s improved offer of £55 million last week. Since then, negotiations have focused on how the fee would be structured. With the major elements now agreed, Elanga is set to travel to Newcastle for his medical and to wrap up the transfer once everything is finalized.

Elanga, who has been on Newcastle’s radar for over a year, is said to be thrilled about the opportunity to join a Champions League club. He was previously the subject of a failed deadline-day move last summer when Newcastle offered around £50 million, but the deal didn’t materialize.

Now, just a year later, it seems that persistence has paid off. Elanga has flourished since his move to Nottingham Forest from Manchester United in 2023, making 83 appearances and racking up 17 goal contributions last season. His performances have made him one of Forest’s standout players, and now he’s set to take the next step in his career under Eddie Howe at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle’s initial pursuit of Elanga last summer included a proposed swap deal involving Miguel Almirón, who was valued at £5 million at the time. Almirón has since moved to Atlanta United, but Newcastle have stuck with their interest in the Swedish winger. The Magpies, having qualified once again for the Champions League, are keen to bolster their attacking depth, and Elanga fits the bill perfectly.

Manchester United, Elanga’s former club, are also poised to benefit from this transfer. As part of the £15 million deal that sent Elanga to Forest, United inserted a sell-on clause entitling them to a share of any profit Forest made from a future sale. With Forest set to receive more than triple what they originally paid, United are expected to bank a decent sum from this move. With the groundwork of the deal in place and Elanga eager to join, it now seems only a matter of time before he officially becomes a Newcastle player. For Eddie Howe, this is a big boost ahead of a demanding campaign on multiple fronts. And for Elanga, it’s a fresh challenge on a bigger stage — one he’s clearly ready for.
