Mathys Tel Joins Tottenham Following a Dramatic Deadline Day U-Turn

Just when it seemed like Tottenham’s transfer window was heading for disaster, they have pulled off a surprise coup by landing Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. The 19-year-old sensation joins on loan, but with a €55 million option to buy.

The move was initially reported to be a straight loan with no option to buy in the summer. However, Spurs negotiated an option to buy during the final hours of the window. Now, the deal sees Tel donning the colors of Spurs after initially rejecting them earlier in the window. On Friday, Tottenham had reached an agreement worth 60-million euros with Bayern for Tel. But reports suggested that the 19-year-old winger wasn’t impressed by Tottenham’s project when Johan Lange and Daniel Levy pitched it. However, a conversation with Ange Postecoglou convinced Tel to make a dramatic deadline day U-turn and sign for the Lilywhites.

"We are delighted to announce the signing of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich, subject to international clearance and work permit," Spurs confirmed in an official statement. "The France Under-21 international will join the Club on loan until the end of the 2024-25 season with an option to make the move permanent in the summer. He will wear the No. 11 shirt."

Bringing in Tel is a huge statement from Spurs, especially considering the level of competition for his signature. The 19-year-old was on the radar of several Premier League heavyweights, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. His decision to leave Bayern in January stemmed from a lack of game time under Vincent Kompany, with the young forward accumulating fewer than 350 minutes this season. Now, he becomes Spurs’ third signing of the winter window, following goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and center-back Kevin Danso.

However, despite the excitement of landing Tel, Spurs endured a frustrating deadline day. With Radu Dragusin ruled out for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury, the club was desperate to bring in another center-back. They made a strong push for Marc Guehi, only to have their bid rejected by Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Axel Disasi opted for a deadline-day loan move to Aston Villa instead of heading to North London. Reports of a potential bid for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Ko Itakura never came to fruition, leaving Spurs without the defensive reinforcement they badly needed as the window slammed shut.
