Liverpool Turn Down Real Madrid's January Bid for Trent Alexander-Arnold

The January transfer window has begun, and the first big piece of news involves Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold. It is being reported that the 26-year-old is subject to a bid by Real Madrid. However, Liverpool have rejected Madrid’s bid, as they don’t plan on selling Trent in the middle of a title race.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract expires in six months, which means that he can sign a pre-contract agreement with other clubs from 1st January. However, in order to get ahead of the competition, Los Blancos are willing to offer Liverpool a transfer fee for the 26-year-old fullback. Trent’s ongoing contract negotiations with the club has been one of the most interesting subplots of Liverpool’s season. The Reds are currently flying high in the Premier League, topping the Prem with 45 points. On top of that, Arne Slot’s men are also topping the Champions League standings, winning all six of their games so far. With Liverpool enjoying a stellar season and still fighting on all fronts, it was always unlikely that they would accept a January transfer for Trent.

Having said that, reports in Spain claim that the 26-year-old fullback has made up his mind on join Madrid. Los Blancos’ intention is for Trent to be an immediate replacement for Dani Carvajal, who is currently sidelined due to an ACL injury. Besides Trent, Liverpool are also in contract talks with Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk. All three players have been handed a contract offer. But while Van Dijk and Salah have publicly spoken about their contract negotiations, Trent hasn’t done the same. Therefore, selling Alexander-Arnold in January could generate significant funds for Liverpool since he’s a homegrown talent and represents "pure profit." However, the Reds have already ruled out that option.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool revolution, playing a key role in their 2019-20 Premier League triumph after winning the Champions League the season prior. With the Reds flying high at the top of the league this season, the 26-year-old could potentially bid farewell to Anfield with another league title if he decides to move on. Spanish outlet Marca reports that Alexander-Arnold has already informed Liverpool of his intention to join Real Madrid, while AS boldly claims that “the signing is 90 per cent complete… Trent has one foot in Real Madrid.” However, sources within Liverpool have poured cold water on these rumors, dismissing claims of any agreement with the European giants. They insist that Trent’s camp has had no formal discussions with any club other than Liverpool.

As speculation swirls, one thing is clear: Alexander-Arnold’s future is at the heart of the football world’s attention, with fans and pundits alike waiting to see if the boy from West Derby is truly Madrid-bound.
