Liverpool have announced they will retire the No. 20 shirt permanently in memory of Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life alongside his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain on July 3. It marks a deeply emotional and historic moment for the club, which, in its 133-year existence, has never before retired a player’s number.
Jota had worn the No. 20 jersey since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. Over five seasons at Anfield, he became a key figure on the pitch and a beloved presence off it. Following discussions with Jota’s widow, Rute, and his family, the club decided that no player at any level — including the Academy and LFC Women — will wear the No. 20 shirt again.
The decision isn’t just about what Jota did with the ball at his feet. It’s a reflection of who he was — a footballer whose impact stretched far beyond goals and assists. In an official statement, the club said: “The move is recognition of not only the immeasurable contribution our lad from Portugal made to the Reds' on-pitch successes over the last five years, but also the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues and supporters and the everlasting connections he built with them.”
Jota’s legacy at Liverpool includes memorable goals, tireless performances, and a level of professionalism that earned him admiration from fans, staff, and players alike. But this tribute is about more than stats — it’s a symbol of the affection and respect he earned during his time at Anfield.
Liverpool will also honor Jota and his brother ahead of Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Preston. A special rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' will be sung before kick-off at 3pm. Preston will lay a wreath in front of the away fans, joining the home side in a unified tribute. A minute’s silence will follow, while digital displays on the big screens and pitchside LED boards will offer tributes throughout the afternoon. Both sets of players will wear black armbands in honor of the two brothers. Additionally, the official matchday programme will include written tributes to Jota and Silva, reflecting on their lives and the lasting impact they’ve left behind.
