Liverpool are ramping up their pursuit of Alexander Isak, with the Newcastle United striker now firmly in their sights for what could be one of the biggest transfers of the summer window. While no official bid has landed on the table yet, sources close to the situation confirm that Liverpool have made their interest known — and are willing to go as high as £120 million to get their man.
Newcastle, for their part, have been consistent in their message: Isak is not for sale. But Liverpool’s approach has been anything but casual. The Reds are weighing up their options carefully, and they’re not alone in the hunt for firepower this summer. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike is another name on their radar — though no formal move has been made for the Frenchman, who also remains a top target for Newcastle.
Isak’s numbers speak for themselves. The 25-year-old Swede has been electric since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022 for around £60 million. He’s hit the net 62 times in 109 appearances, including a stunning 27-goal campaign last season that helped Newcastle finish fifth and secure Champions League qualification. With Darwin Núñez’s future uncertain and reports suggesting he could be on his way out, Liverpool boss Arne Slot is looking to reshape the attack around a more clinical and consistent finisher. Isak is seen as the ideal frontman to lead the line.
Despite spending close to £185 million already this summer — bringing in Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong — Liverpool are not out of fuel financially. In fact, they're in an unusually strong position. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire shed light on their healthy books. “Liverpool are in a position of strength,” Maguire said. “They were quiet in the market last year, and they’ve already moved on a few fringe players. There’s talk about Luis Diaz potentially leaving too. If Isak comes in, many would see that as an upgrade.”
Liverpool have posted a positive PSR (Profit and Sustainability Regulations) margin of £48 million for the last financial year. With the Premier League allowing up to £105 million in losses across three years, that gives the club around £153 million of headroom. Add to that a booming £700 million annual revenue, largely fueled by commercial deals and European runs, and it’s clear the Merseyside outfit can still splash the cash.
Slot’s rebuild has already turned heads, and the addition of Isak would send a powerful message: Liverpool mean business. With three years left on his deal at Newcastle, it won’t be easy, but the Reds appear ready to test the Magpies’ resolve — and perhaps break the bank to get it done.
