Liverpool Eye Alexander Isak but Newcastle Star Looks Set to Stay Put

Fresh off a title-winning season under Arne Slot, Liverpool are wasting no time flexing their financial might in the transfer market. Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz have already been signed, Milos Kerkez is on his way from Bournemouth for £40 million, and the Reds are now shifting their attention toward bolstering their attack.

With Darwin Nunez struggling to convince and rumours swirling about a possible exit, the club’s recruitment team has been scouring the market for a reliable forward. And one name that’s been catching their eye — and just about everyone else’s — is Alexander Isak. The Newcastle striker had an outstanding 2024-25 campaign, banging in 23 Premier League goals and playing a vital role in helping the Magpies clinch a Champions League spot. Since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022, the Swedish international has netted 62 goals in 109 appearances.

Naturally, interest is high. Liverpool admire him — who wouldn’t? He’s only 25 and already one of the sharpest finishers in Europe. But despite all the noise on social media, The Telegraph reports there’s been no contact between Liverpool and Newcastle. No inquiries, no talks — just admiration from afar. And that’s backed up by Fabrizio Romano, who threw a wet blanket on Liverpool fans’ hopes during his Market Madness Podcast: “Liverpool would try to go for Isak [if he became available], but at the moment I don’t have this feeling,” he said. “The club too, from what I’m hearing, see it as a very, very difficult deal.”

It’s not hard to see why. Isak still has three years left on his Newcastle deal, and he’s become central to Eddie Howe’s project. With the Magpies returning to the Champions League, there’s little reason for Isak to push for an exit. On top of that, prying him away would require an astronomical fee — somewhere north of £150 million, possibly approaching the Neymar territory of £200 million.

So, while Liverpool clearly rate him and would pounce if the door opened, that door seems firmly shut for now. Newcastle are holding tight, and Isak seems content to continue leading the line at St James’ Park. For Liverpool, the search for a new striker goes on. But unless something changes dramatically, Isak won’t be swapping black and white for red anytime soon.
