Borussia Dortmund Set To Appoint Former Bayern Boss Niko Kovač as New Manager

After Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, sporting director Lars Ricken announced that Dortmund have struck a deal with Niko Kovač to take over as their new head coach. The 53-year-old manager has been out of work since vacating his coaching position at Wolfsburg last March.

In a recent interview with DAZN, Lars Ricken shared the news about Niko Kovac's appointment as Dortmund's new manager. He confirmed, “We have reached an agreement in principle. He (Niko Kovac) will take over the team on Sunday. It's been the right decision with him so far. I hope we can confirm that with a win against Heidenheim. That would be a great favor to all of us, especially Mike, who has done a great job so far.” Dortmund have reportedly locked Kovac down with a contract until 2026. The 53-year-old arrives into this job with huge German football pedigree, having already managed clubs like Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich.

However, Niko Kovac is stepping into a challenging role, as Dortmund have been far from their usual high standards. Currently sitting in 11th place in the Bundesliga, they’ve been struggling, having lost or drawn their last four Bundesliga matches. The pressure became too much, leading to the dismissal of Nuri Sahin last week following a humiliating defeat to Bologna in the Champions League. Sahin later shared his departure in an official statement, saying, “Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best.” It’s clear that Dortmund’s ambitions are much higher, and now, it’s up to Kovac to steer the ship in the right direction.

Interim boss Mike Tullberg, who stepped up from Dortmund’s Under-19s, will take charge for one last time in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Heidenheim. After that, it’s over to Niko Kovač, who will officially take the reins when Dortmund face Stuttgart on February 8. Tullberg’s short spell in charge saw Dortmund finally pick up their first league point of the year with a 2-2 draw at Werder Bremen, before guiding them to a 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday. That victory, secured by two early goals from Serhou Guirassy and a late strike from Ramy Bensebaini, ensured Dortmund finished among the seeded teams. Now, they’ll face either Club Brugge or Sporting Lisbon in a two-legged playoff for a place in the Champions League last 16.
