Luis Díaz's time at Liverpool looks to be winding down, with Bayern Munich closing in on a deal for the Colombian winger. Despite previously holding firm on their €80 million valuation, the Premier League champions are now reportedly ready to accept a slightly lower offer from the German giants.
Díaz, who still has two years left on his contract at Anfield, has made it clear that he's ready for a new challenge. His preference? A move to Bayern. The 28-year-old even missed Liverpool’s recent pre-season defeat to AC Milan, with the club now granting him permission to leave their Asia tour in anticipation of a transfer being finalized. According to ESPN, Díaz initially told the club he wanted to leave as early as last summer. At the time, Liverpool weren’t keen on letting him go, opting instead to evaluate their squad and monitor the market. Since then, two separate rounds of contract talks broke down, reportedly because Liverpool and Díaz’s camp couldn’t find common ground.
Interest in the Colombian has been strong all summer. Both Barcelona and Bayern tested Liverpool’s resolve, but their early offers were met with a firm “not for sale.” However, that stance has clearly softened. Bayern’s most recent €67.5 million bid was turned down earlier this month, but with the player pushing for the move and the Reds now looking to balance their books, an agreement is now within reach.
Díaz had his best season yet in a Liverpool shirt in 2024–25, scoring 17 goals across all competitions and playing a key role in helping Arne Slot’s side clinch the Premier League title. Since arriving from FC Porto in January 2022, he’s shown moments of brilliance, but now looks ready to start a new chapter.
His departure will also help Liverpool make room financially for more signings. The club has already splashed out close to £290 million on major additions this summer, including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Hugo Ekitike. Offloading Díaz would free up funds and wages — and that’s not all. Harvey Elliott and Darwin Núñez are also expected to be sold, and the plan is to funnel that money into a big push for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. Isak has already submitted a transfer request and was left out of Newcastle’s Asia tour. Liverpool have long admired the Swedish forward and view him as a long-term solution up front.
Back on the pitch, Slot’s squad is preparing for their next pre-season friendly on July 30 against Yokohama F. Marinos. With everything pointing to an imminent transfer, it’s unlikely we’ll see Díaz play in a Liverpool shirt again. A move to Bayern would also see Díaz join a squad pushing to retain their Bundesliga crown, and he’d be expected to slot straight into their starting XI. For Liverpool, the focus now shifts to ensuring a smooth rebuild — and if things go to plan, they’ll have the funds and firepower to do just that.
