Ajinkya Rahane is set to lead Kolkata Knight Riders in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), marking a remarkable comeback for the veteran batter. Meanwhile, all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has been named the vice-captain as KKR looks to defend their title.
For Rahane, this leadership role is a testament to perseverance. Not long ago, he seemed to be out of favor in the T20 format, going unsold in the initial rounds of the IPL auction after a lukewarm stint with Chennai Super Kings. But KKR saw value in his experience and calm presence, snapping him up for his base price of Rs 1.50 crore in the accelerated auction. His resurgence was fueled by an outstanding domestic season with Mumbai, where he led them to Irani Cup and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumphs.

Rahane was in sublime form during the SMAT T20s, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with 469 runs in eight innings. He averaged an impressive 58.62 with a blistering strike rate of 164.56, racking up five half-centuries along the way. Speaking about his new role, Rahane expressed his excitement, saying, "Leading KKR is an honor. We have a well-balanced squad, and I look forward to working together to defend our title."
On the other hand, Venkatesh Iyer’s journey has been just as eventful. Initially released back into the player pool ahead of the mega auction, he became one of the most sought-after names, with KKR securing him for a staggering Rs 23.75 crore – making him the third-most expensive Indian player in the league.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore highlighted the leadership qualities both Rahane and Iyer bring to the team, stating, “We are delighted to have someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader. Also, Venkatesh Iyer has been a franchise player for KKR and brings a lot of leadership qualities. We are confident that they will combine well as we start the defense of our title.”
