Shardul Thakur Shines as LSG's Injury Replacement in IPL 2025

Lucknow Super Giants’ Shardul Thakur made an instant impact against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, rattling their top order with two wickets in the third over itself. With Rishabh Pant opting to bowl first, Thakur wasted no time proving that decision right.

Heading into this game, many expected SRH to be the first IPL team to smash past 300, and it wasn’t just blind optimism. They had just put up a massive 286 in their last match, and LSG were missing key seamers. But cricket has a way of surprising everyone. Instead of a record-breaking total, SRH couldn't even reach 200, finishing at 190 for 9. That’s still a competitive score, but it was far from what many had envisioned.

Thakur was the man who made sure of that, finishing with figures of 4 for 34 – his best-ever performance in the IPL. He removed Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan off back-to-back deliveries in the third over. Abhishek mistimed a pull straight to deep square leg, while Kishan gloved one down the leg side. Travis Head looked to counter-attack, smashing two sixes and a four off Avesh Khan in the very next over. In the final over of the powerplay, he tried to take on Ravi Bishnoi but ended up skying a slog sweep – only for Nicholas Pooran to drop a sitter at long-on.

Thakur returned in the death overs to pick up two more wickets, dismissing Abhinav Manohar and then Mohammed Shami to wrap up a brilliant spell. In total, he bowled 11 dot balls, completing his four-over spell with figures of 4 for 34. With this spell, Thakur became the seventh bowler to take a four-wicket haul for LSG and now holds the fifth-best bowling figures in the franchise's history. During the game, he also reached the 100-wicket mark in the IPL, achieving the feat in his 97th match.

It’s a stunning turnaround for Thakur, who went unsold in last year’s auction and only found his way into the LSG squad as a late replacement due to injuries. But he’s wasted no time proving his worth, and after this spell, his name is once again being chanted loud and clear.
