Sanju Samson has been playing as an impact player in IPL 2025 so far, but the Rajasthan Royals skipper is now looking to return to his full role – including keeping wickets and leading the team. To make that happen, he has traveled to Bengaluru to seek clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Samson flew from Guwahati to Bengaluru on Monday to request full medical clearance. He had undergone surgery on his right index finger earlier and was only given a temporary green light to play as a batter. Now, he’ll undergo testing by the Centre of Excellence’s Sport Science wing to determine if he can resume wicketkeeping duties.
Due to his partial clearance, Samson had handed over captaincy to Riyan Parag and played solely as a batter in RR’s first three matches. However, he’s hoping to be back behind the stumps – and back as the team's leader – when Rajasthan Royals face Punjab Kings on April 5 in Chandigarh. “He will seek clearance to do so for the remaining games and is expected to be back as skipper from RR’s next match, which is nearly a week away,” a source told Cricbuzz.
Despite playing in a limited role, Samson has been making an impact. In three matches, he has registered scores of 66, 13, and 20. He has also hit five sixes, bringing his overall T20 tally to 342 sixes – surpassing MS Dhoni’s 341 maximums in the format. Additionally, Samson recently reached the 4,500-run milestone in the IPL during RR’s clash against Chennai Super Kings. He became just the 14th player to achieve this feat, doing so in his 166th IPL innings.
Since making his IPL debut for RR in 2013, Samson has played 171 matches, amassing 4,518 runs. He remains RR’s all-time leading run-scorer with 3,841 runs, while Jos Buttler is the only other player to cross 3,000 runs for the franchise (3,055). Therefore, Rajasthan Royals fans are eager to see their captain back at full strength, guiding the team toward what they hope will be a second straight playoff appearance.
