RR’s Stand-In Skipper Riyan Parag Fined for Slow Over-Rate in IPL Clash Against CSK

Rajasthan Royals finally got their first win of the IPL 2025 season, edging out Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling contest on Sunday night. While the victory was cause for celebration, their captain, Riyan Parag, found himself in hot water after the match. IPL’s governing body handed him a hefty fine for a slow over-rate violation.

On Monday, the BCCI announced that Parag had been penalized for Rajasthan's sluggish over-rate against CSK at the Barsapara Stadium. Since this was the team's first offence of the season, Parag was fined INR 12 lakhs under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate breaches.

Parag isn’t the only skipper to face such a fine this season. Mumbai Indians' Hardik Pandya was also penalized for a slow over-rate during MI’s 36-run loss to Gujarat Titans on Saturday. However, Pandya has had a rougher history with over-rate violations – last season, MI breached the rule twice, leading to his one-match ban. He was forced to sit out Mumbai's 2025 season opener against CSK.

Ahead of this season, though, the BCCI tweaked the rule. Instead of suspensions, captains will now receive demerit points along with fines based on the severity of the offence. According to the IPL Code of Conduct, teams must complete their 20-over quota within a set time, something Parag and his Royals failed to do. As a result, he was penalized.

Despite the fine, Rajasthan had plenty to cheer about. They held their nerve in a tense finish, beating CSK by just six runs. Defending 183, RR struck early, and CSK couldn’t recover in time, handing Parag his first win as captain.
