India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has earned a nomination for one of the most prestigious honors in the sporting world – the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award. The announcement, made on Monday (March 4), places Pant among the elite, making him only the second cricketer ever to be nominated for a Laureus Award, following in the footsteps of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Pant’s nomination is a testament to his extraordinary journey back to the cricket field after surviving a life-threatening car accident. On December 30, 2022, while driving from Delhi to his hometown Roorkee, Pant dozed off at the wheel, causing his car to crash into a divider before flipping over. The impact was severe, and to make matters worse, the vehicle immediately caught fire. Fortunately, a group of locals sprang into action, pulling him to safety before the flames consumed the car. The accident left Pant with multiple injuries, including ligament damage in his right knee, wrist and ankle injuries, back abrasions, and deep cuts on his forehead.
Forced into a long and grueling rehabilitation process, Pant spent over a year recovering, undergoing multiple surgeries to regain his fitness. His much-anticipated return came in IPL 2024 when he stepped onto the field for Delhi Capitals in their clash against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur. He quickly silenced any doubts about his form, delivering stellar performances with the bat. His impressive comeback earned him a spot in India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where he played a pivotal role in guiding the team to victory under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
Pant’s resurgence reached another historic milestone in November 2024 when he became the most expensive player in IPL history. In a jaw-dropping auction, Lucknow Super Giants secured him for a record-breaking INR 27 crore. Now a key part of India’s campaign for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pant reflected on his incredible journey in an official statement: "I have always believed that the biggest virtue of life is to be grateful for everything God has blessed you with. Over the course of my life, I have focused on being positive and happy in every situation, trusting the power of self-belief and resilience to deal with every challenge.”
"When I survived the near-fatal car crash, I realized that I have been fortunate to be a blessed soul, which inspired me to work extremely hard to undo everything and return to the pitch as a better version of myself with greater motivation." Pant’s nomination is not just a personal triumph – it’s a story of resilience, determination, and an unbreakable spirit that has inspired millions of fans across the world.
