After ten long years, Ravichandran Ashwin has donned the colors of the Chennai Super Kings. Ashwin – or better known as Ash Anna by Chennai fans – was purchased by CSK at the mega-auction for 9.75 crores after an intense bidding war with Rajasthan Royals. The veteran spinner played for CSK from 2009 to 2015.
Ashwin was released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of last year’s mega auction. Despite being released, it was expected that a bidding war would ensue for the veteran spinner, and that’s exactly how things panned out. CSK and RR were engaged in a fierce bidding war, but the Chennai-based franchise came out on top. With 212 appearances in IPL, Ashwin was one of the most experienced players available at the mega auction. And he now returns to CSK after 10 years. He played for the franchise until 2015, before moving to the Rising Pune Supergiant and then later to Punjab Kings in 2018.

Recent visuals from CSK’s pre-IPL training camp show that the 38-year-old spinner has reported for training, reuniting with old teammates like MS Dhoni and Shreyas Gopal. Ashwin – who announced his retirement from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar trophy – stated that he still plans to play for CSK for a long time, despite retiring from international cricket. During an interview, he stated, “I am going to play for CSK, and don't be surprised if I try and aspire to play for as long as I can. I don't think Ashwin the cricketer is done. I think Ashwin the Indian cricketer has probably called it time. That's it."
