Pat Cummins Eyes IPL 2025 Comeback | Aims for Full Recovery Before T20 League

Sunrisers Hyderabad fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Pat Cummins, who led Sunrisers to the IPL final last year, is looking to return to action before IPL 2025. The Australian captain has been out of action for over a month due to an ankle injury. However, in a recent interview, Cummins reassured fans that he's working towards regaining full fitness and hopes to be back in time for the tournament.

Many Sunrisers Hyderabad fans were worried that the Aussie pacer might miss IPL 2025 altogether. Cummins has already been ruled out of Australia’s Champions Trophy squad and missed their recent tour of Sri Lanka. His ankle injury, which he picked up during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has kept him sidelined for over a month. That injury came at a bittersweet moment for the Australian captain. He had just led his side to their first BGT series win in over a decade, playing a key role not just as a leader but also with the ball. His 25 wickets in the series were second only to Jasprit Bumrah’s 32. However, the celebrations were cut short when it was announced that Cummins would miss the Champions Trophy as he continued his recovery.

Now, in an interview with Cricket.com.au, Cummins finally gave an encouraging update on his return to action. “The ankle is starting to come good. It's a funny one –- it's not like a hamstring where you need six weeks (to recover). It's one of those ones where it really just needs a bit (more) rest to settle down. So, we just ran out of time for Pakistan," he explained. He further added, "It's just one of those ones you've got to manage. A bit of a break now, hopefully, it sets it up for the next year or so. Physically it's quite a nice build-up for the World Test Championship final, and then the Test matches after that. That’s the aim at this stage – start bowling over the next week or so, building up, and should be right for IPL."

Before Cummins’ injury update, Sunrisers Hyderabad had every reason to be concerned about Pat Cummins’ fitness. After all, they splashed a whopping ₹20.5 crore to bring him in for IPL 2024, and the Australian captain delivered in style, leading them to the final in what was a remarkable campaign for the Men in Orange. Ahead of IPL 2025, SRH showed their faith in him once again, retaining him for ₹18 crore. Losing him to injury would have been a massive setback for the Sunrisers.

Interestingly, Cummins’ time away from cricket wasn’t just about rehab – it also coincided with a special moment in his personal life, as he welcomed his second child, daughter Edi. Now, with the IPL season fast approaching, Cummins has resumed running and is ramping up his preparations to rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad. The tournament begins on 22nd March, and he is targeting a return in time for SRH’s opening match against Rajasthan Royals on 23rd March. Fans will be hoping their captain can pick up right where he left off and lead another strong campaign.
