Mumbai Indians Win WPL 2025

Mumbai Indians were crowned Women’s Premier League (WPL) champions for the second time in three seasons after a hard-fought eight-run victory over Delhi Capitals in the 2025 final at the Brabourne Stadium. In a tense contest, MI successfully defended a target of 150, holding DC to 141/9 in 20 overs with Nat Sciver-Brunt starring with the ball, taking 3/30.

Delhi skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and put Mumbai in to bat, and it looked like the Capitals were in control early on. Hayley Matthews (3) and Yastika Bhatia (8) fell cheaply, with Marizanne Kapp striking twice to leave Mumbai struggling at 14/2. But MI’s leader Harmanpreet Kaur rose to the occasion, smashing a brilliant 66 off 44 balls to guide her team back on track. Partnering with Nat Sciver-Brunt (30), Harmanpreet steadied the innings, taking Mumbai past the 100-run mark. But just when MI seemed to be cruising, a dramatic collapse saw them lose four wickets for just 15 runs, slumping from 103/2 to 118/6. Still, their total of 150/7 was competitive, given the pressure of a final.

DC’s run chase got off to a disastrous start, with both Lanning and Shafali Verma dismissed inside the first three overs. The situation worsened when Jess Jonassen and Annabel Sutherland departed soon after, leaving Delhi reeling at 4/28. But just when it seemed all hope was lost, Jemimah Rodrigues provided a spark, playing the most fluent knock of the match with the highest strike rate of any batter facing more than seven balls. She raced to 30 in style, smashing back-to-back boundaries to begin the 11th over. However, Amelia Kerr struck a crucial blow, dismissing Rodrigues with a sharp caught-and-bowled after the batter closed her bat face too early while attempting a single.

With the top order in ruins, Marizanne Kapp tried to rescue Delhi once again. She built a fighting partnership with Sarah Bryce, but a mix-up between the wickets saw Bryce run out. Kapp continued battling, and when Kerr carried a catch over the boundary in the 16th over, it looked like momentum was finally shifting in Delhi’s favor. However, just as hope flickered, Matthews dismissed Kapp for 40, sealing DC’s fate. Sciver-Brunt then took two wickets in two balls, including Shikha Pandey, to snuff out any remaining resistance. As Delhi fell short once again, Mumbai’s celebrations started, while DC were left to endure a third straight heartbreak in a WPL final.

Harmanpreet Kaur was the Player of the Match while Nat Sciver-Brunt was the Player of the Tournament. Sciver-Brunt also won the Orange Cap, while Amelia Kerr took the Purple Cap.
