Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that the Lanka Premier League (LPL) for 2025 will not happen as planned this year. Instead, they are focusing on preparing for the big event ahead — the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which Sri Lanka will co-host with India early next year.
The main reason is simple: Sri Lanka needs to make sure its cricket venues are ready for the world stage. The Sri Lanka Cricket said that all stadiums hosting the T20 World Cup must be in perfect shape. This means updating the stadiums, improving player facilities, and upgrading broadcast and media centers to meet international standards.
Right now, three major stadiums in Sri Lanka are being renovated. For example, the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo had to pause its upgrades temporarily to host matches for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025. Now, the work will continue at full speed after that tournament finishes.
This postponement means no LPL action for cricket fans this year. Players and teams will need to adjust their plans, too. But the good news is that this break gives the cricket board time to make significant improvements. These upgrades will help bring a better experience for everyone when the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 comes around.
SLC has not yet announced new dates for the LPL. Fans and teams will have to wait for further updates. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is putting all its efforts into preparing world-class venues to host the international event smoothly.
