Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from IPL 2025 has already sparked plenty of curiosity among fans, and while everyone’s eager to see him back in Mumbai Indians colors, that wait might stretch a little longer.
Not only is Bumrah set to miss MI’s clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday, but he’s also a major doubt for their next home fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 7th April. According to ESPNcricinfo, the star pacer is still in rehab, recovering from a lower-back stress issue that first flared up in January. He’s been steadily building up his bowling workload at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is reportedly closing in on the final phase of his fitness testing. Only once he gets the green light from the BCCI’s medical team will he be allowed to join up with the MI squad and return to action.
Bumrah isn’t taking any chances either. With India’s massive five-Test tour of England starting from 28th June, he’s understandably cautious about rushing back too soon. The last official word came back on 19th March, when MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted it was a "challenge" to start the season without their pace spearhead. Back then, the hope was that Bumrah might return in April — but it looks like that timeline has been pushed further.
Bumrah picked up the latest injury during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on 4th January, and he’s been sidelined ever since, even missing India’s Champions Trophy-winning campaign. This marks the first time since his back surgery in March 2023 that he’s had a setback in that area. A one-franchise man, Bumrah has played his entire IPL career with Mumbai Indians since debuting in 2013, racking up 165 wickets in 133 matches. The only IPL season he’s missed so far was in 2023 — also due to back injury. While MI fans will be hoping to see him back soon, the focus for now is on making sure Bumrah returns only when he’s fully fit and firing.
