After a week of uncertainty and speculation, the BCCI has finally confirmed that the remainder of IPL 2025 will go ahead, starting May 17. The announcement came through an official statement on Monday, putting an end to the suspense around the tournament's future after it was suspended due to geopolitical tensions earlier this month.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the resumption of the TATA IPL 2025. After extensive consultations with government and security agencies, and with all the key stakeholders, the Board has decided to proceed with the remainder of the season,” the BCCI stated. In total, 17 matches are left to be played—including the four playoff fixtures—and they’ll be spread out across six cities: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. The first match back will see Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru on May 17.
The final, which was originally scheduled for May 25 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, has now been pushed to June 3. But the venue might change depending on the weather. “The final venue could be changed as rain can affect the matches in Kolkata later, so this call will be taken accordingly,” a BCCI official told ANI. As it stands, 57 matches have already been completed in this year’s IPL, with the 58th game—between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals—abandoned midway due to the emergency security situation on May 8. That incident, involving an attempted breach of Indian airspace near Chandigarh, led to a sudden blackout and forced the league into an immediate pause.
Gujarat Titans currently sit at the top of the table with 16 points and a strong net run rate of 0.793. Royal Challengers Bengaluru also have 16 points but trail GT on NRR, holding second place. Punjab Kings are third with 15 points, and Mumbai Indians round out the top four with 14. The playoffs have also been rescheduled, with the following new dates:
Details on where these high-stakes matches will be played are still under wraps, and BCCI is expected to reveal that soon. As part of the revamped schedule, two double-headers are also planned—both on Sundays—to make sure the league wraps up smoothly. The BCCI, in its statement, also took a moment to express gratitude to India’s armed forces, who played a crucial role in restoring stability.
“The BCCI takes this opportunity to once again salute the bravery and resilience of India’s armed forces, whose efforts have enabled the safe return of cricket. The Board reaffirms its commitment to national interest while ensuring the successful completion of the league,” the statement read. So, after a tense break, the IPL circus is back in action—and fans won’t have to wait much longer to see their teams back on the field. All that remains now is to see how the final stretch unfolds and who can hold their nerve in the push for glory.
