After days of uncertainty and a sudden pause in the middle of the season, the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League is finally edging closer to a much-awaited return. With diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan calming down after a mutually agreed ceasefire, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now preparing to get the tournament back on track later this week.
While the league’s official statement is expected by Monday (May 12), all signs point to cricket returning to the IPL stage in the coming days—likely around May 16 or 17. BCCI officials have already drawn up multiple options for the remaining leg of the season and are currently weighing the pros and cons of each.
The IPL 2025 season was abruptly suspended following the rise in geopolitical tensions, which triggered a wave of concern and led several overseas players to leave India mid-tournament. But with the situation stabilizing, the buzz around the league’s restart has grown rapidly, and a final decision is just around the corner.
According to reports, the BCCI has prepared three different scheduling blueprints. One of them would see the league return to the usual home-and-away format—though with Dharamsala possibly left out due to logistical constraints. The other two plans involve staging the remainder of the tournament at fewer venues, mostly concentrated in the south of India, likely Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. This would allow the BCCI to manage security and operations more efficiently in light of the recent unrest.
The IPL Governing Council is set to meet on Monday afternoon to give the final nod to the new schedule. With only 16 matches left—including the four crucial playoff games—there’s a strong desire within the board to wrap things up in a smooth and timely fashion. Even though there hasn’t been an official announcement just yet, franchise insiders have hinted that they’ve been informally told to regroup and be ready to fly out to their bases at short notice. That’s as good a sign as any that things are about to kick off again.
One key challenge that remains is the uncertain availability of foreign players. With many international cricketers having left the country amid last week’s volatile situation, it’s unclear how many will return to see out the remainder of their IPL commitments. For the franchises, this could mean reshuffling their playing XIs and leaning more heavily on local talent.
The BCCI is treading cautiously, trying to balance safety concerns with the need to complete the season. While there’s been talk of restricting the league to a few centres to make things more manageable, no final decision has been taken on that front yet. Still, the mood has clearly shifted. After a brief pause, the IPL 2025 appears ready to light up TV screens and stadiums once again. Now, fans, players, and franchises alike are just waiting for that official green light.
