Guwahati’s ACA Stadium Set to Make History as Northeast’s First-Ever Test Venue

Test cricket is about to make its long-awaited debut in the Northeast, with Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium set to host its first-ever Test match later this year. The BCCI has unveiled the schedule for India’s 2025 home season, confirming that the stadium will be one of four venues for the upcoming Tests.

Alongside Guwahati, matches will also be played in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and New Delhi, with India set to face West Indies and South Africa in two-Test series each. Barsapara will witness history when India takes on South Africa in the second and final Test of their series from 22nd November. This isn’t just a milestone for the stadium but a moment of immense pride for Assam and the entire Northeast region, as it will be the first-ever Test match played there. Guwahati’s Barsapara Stadium will be the 30th venue in India to host an International Test match. Devajit Lon Saikia, Secretary of the BCCI, played a crucial role in making this a reality. His efforts and commitment have helped bring the longest format of the game to a region that has long waited for its moment on the big stage.

The two-Test series against West Indies will get things underway, with matches scheduled in Ahmedabad and Kolkata, starting 6th October. South Africa’s tour will follow, beginning 18th November with the first Test in New Delhi before the action shifts to Guwahati. Both visiting teams will be returning for a Test series in India after several years. West Indies last played a Test series here in 2018, a tour remembered for Prithvi Shaw’s stunning debut century in Visakhapatnam. India, led by Virat Kohli at the time, dominated the series, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory.

South Africa’s last red-ball tour of India was also a tough one, as they were handed a 3-0 series defeat. The 2019 series saw Kohli produce one of his finest knocks – an unbeaten 254 in Pune. This time around, the Proteas will have an extended stay, as their tour includes three ODIs and five T20Is. The T20s, in particular, will be vital for both teams as they gear up for next year’s T20 World Cup.
