David Warner has been handed the captaincy of Karachi Kings for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10, replacing Shan Masood at the helm. The Kings struggled last season, finishing fifth with just eight points, and will be hoping Warner’s leadership can turn things around.
The former Australia opener, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, is set to play in the PSL instead. Karachi Kings made a big statement by signing him for a record-breaking USD 300,000, making him the most expensive player in PSL history. "Warner, a World Cup-winning veteran and one of the most explosive openers in T20 cricket, brings a wealth of experience to the role," the franchise said in a statement. "With over a decade of leadership in global leagues, including the Big Bash League (BBL), Warner is poised to inspire a fresh chapter for the Kings."
Warner’s captaincy experience is well-documented. He has led teams in the Big Bash League (BBL), Indian Premier League (IPL), and has played a key role in Australia’s ODI and T20 World Cup triumphs. Karachi Kings drafted him as their first Platinum category pick in the PSL 10 Players Draft held in January.
The franchise also expressed gratitude to Shan Masood, who captained the team last season. "We are thrilled to welcome David Warner to the Karachi Kings family as our new captain. His track record as a leader and match-winner aligns perfectly with our vision for HBL PSL 10," said Karachi Kings Owner Salman Iqbal. "At the same time, we extend our deepest appreciation to Shan Masood for his exceptional contributions last season. His efforts were pivotal in building a strong foundation, and we look forward to his continued role as a key player in the squad."
Karachi Kings have struggled in recent years, failing to reach the playoffs since their title-winning campaign in 2020. In the following season, Karachi Kings made the playoffs but have failed to reach the knockouts since, suffering three consecutive league-stage exits. Before their title-winning campaign in 2020, they were consistent contenders, making the playoffs every season from 2016 to 2019. Under Warner’s leadership, they will be aiming to break that streak and make a serious push for the PSL trophy. The Kings will kick off their campaign against Multan Sultans on 12th April at their home ground, National Bank Stadium, Karachi.
