Delhi Capitals pulled off a thrilling comeback in their IPL 2025 opener against Lucknow Super Giants, thanks to a breathtaking late assault from Ashutosh Sharma. His 66 off just 31 balls helped Delhi snatch victory from what looked like a lost cause, turning what seemed like a hopeless chase into a last-over triumph.
Chasing 210, Delhi’s chances looked bleak when they collapsed to 7 for 3 and later 65 for 5. With victory looking nearly impossible, Ashutosh Sharma and debutant Vipraj Nigam produced an incredible rescue act. Struggling early on with a run-a-ball 20, Ashutosh suddenly switched gears, smashing 46 runs off his last 11 balls to seal an improbable win. He finished the game in style, smashing a six into the stands and celebrating with pure emotion. After the match, Ashutosh dedicated his Player of the Match award to his mentor, Shikhar Dhawan. "I just want to dedicate this Man of the Match award to my mentor, Shikhar paaji," he said during the post-match presentation.
The emotional moment didn’t end there. Shortly after, Ashutosh was seen speaking to Dhawan on a video call, with the veteran congratulating his former Punjab Kings teammate. "He was really happy. Love you paaji," Ashutosh said in a video shared by Delhi Capitals. The bond between Dhawan and Ashutosh dates back to their time together at Punjab Kings in IPL 2024. Ashutosh first met Dhawan at a pre-season camp, where the former India opener was so impressed that he gifted Ashutosh one of his bats. That very bat later helped Ashutosh make a dream debut in the Ranji Trophy, where he smashed a century for Railways against Gujarat.
