RB Leipzig’s rise in German football is one of the most rapid and controversial stories in recent memory. Founded in 2009, the club's history began when Red Bull GmbH, the global energy drink giant, took over the playing rights of fifth-tier side SSV Markranstädt. The takeover was part of Red Bull’s ambition to establish a foothold in German football, and the result was RB Leipzig – a club destined to shake up the football hierarchy.

Leipzig quickly ascended through the ranks of German football. Their journey through the divisions was nothing short of meteoric. Within just seven years, they were promoted to the Bundesliga in 2016. The club’s structure and financial backing enabled them to attract top talents and build a competitive team right from the start. Players like Timo Werner, Naby Keïta, and Emil Forsberg were integral to their rapid rise. RB Leipzig’s high-energy, pressing style under manager Ralph Hasenhüttl helped them finish second in their debut Bundesliga season, immediately making them a force to be reckoned with.

While Leipzig’s ascent thrilled many, it also sparked criticism. Many traditional football fans and clubs in Germany saw RB Leipzig as the embodiment of modern commercialism, contrasting sharply with the deeply rooted traditions of clubs like Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund. Despite this, the club’s success continued, and they made their debut in the UEFA Champions League in 2017.

In 2020s, Leipzig have solidified themselves as regular contenders for both Bundesliga titles and deep runs in European competitions. They reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2020 and have consistently challenged for domestic trophies, including winning the DFB-Pokal in 2022 and 2023.
