Olympique de Marseille, often simply called OM, is one of the most storied and passionate football clubs in France. Founded in 1899, this club from the vibrant port city of Marseille has carved out an iconic place in French football history. With their white and sky-blue kits and a fanbase known for its fierce loyalty, OM have become synonymous with both footballing success and drama.
Marseille’s most significant achievement came in 1993 when they became the first—and still the only—French club to win the UEFA Champions League. Under the guidance of manager Raymond Goethals and the leadership of captain Didier Deschamps, they triumphed over AC Milan in the final, thanks to a memorable header from Basile Boli. That victory remains one of the defining moments in the club’s illustrious history and cemented their place among Europe’s elite.
Domestically, OM have been a dominant force, particularly in Ligue 1. They’ve won the French league title nine times, with their golden era spanning the late 1980s and early 1990s, fueled by a squad full of stars like Jean-Pierre Papin, Chris Waddle, and Rudi Völler. Marseille also boasts ten Coupe de France titles. However, OM's journey hasn't always been smooth. The club was involved in a match-fixing scandal in 1993, which led to their relegation to Ligue 2. Yet, their resilience shone through as they worked their way back to the top of French football.
In recent years, Marseille have experienced a mix of highs and lows. Under the guidance of managers like Marcelo Bielsa and André Villas-Boas, the club has consistently battled for Champions League spots, but they’ve struggled to reclaim the Ligue 1 title, last won in 2010. Nonetheless, with passionate fans filling the iconic Stade Vélodrome and a squad often brimming with talent, OM remains one of the most exciting and unpredictable teams in French football.
