Napoli was established in 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli through the merger of US Internazionale Napoli and Naples Foot-Ball Club. In its initial years, the club experienced limited success, with their first significant achievement coming in 1962 when they clinched the Coppa Italia. However, the club’s golden era began in the late 1970s and reached its pinnacle in the late 1980s, largely thanks to the arrival of Diego Maradona in 1984.
Under his spell, Napoli transformed from an underdog into a formidable force in Italian football. With Maradona leading the charge, the club clinched its first Serie A title in 1987, a historic moment that sent waves of joy through the city of Naples. They followed up this success by winning another Scudetto in 1990, along with the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup.
The post-Maradona years saw Napoli endure ups and downs, experiencing relegations and financial struggles that tested the club's resilience. However, the spirit of the Neapolitan people shone through, as they continued to support their team through thick and thin. The arrival of players like Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain reignited hope, leading to competitive performances in Serie A and thrilling European campaigns.
In recent years, Napoli has returned to the summit of Italian football. Under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, Napoli once again returned to the top step on Italian football. The Italian head coach led the Partenopei to their first Scudetto in over three decades during the 2022-23 season. Players like Poitr Zielenski, Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Kim-Min Jae blossomed into true world-class talents. However, after just one year, just Kvaratskhelia remains in Naples. Now, Napoli are at the beginning of a new era under serial winner, Antonio Conte.
