Founded in 1909, Bologna 1909 quickly rose to prominence in Italian football, particularly in the pre-World War II era. Based in the historic city of Bologna, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, the club's home ground, Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, has witnessed both the highs and lows of Italian football.
The club’s golden era came during the 1930s and 1940s when Bologna became a dominant force in Italian football. They won their first Serie A title in 1925, just sixteen years after their founding, and followed it up with several more championships, claiming a total of seven Serie A titles by 1964. Their famous motto at the time was, "We’re going to school Europe!" symbolizing their ambition and belief that they were setting an example for Italian football on the continental stage. The 1930s saw them win four league titles, including back-to-back triumphs in 1936 and 1937. Bologna was known for their attacking flair and solid defense, led by players like Angelo Schiavio, who was a key figure for both the club and the Italian national team.
However, after the 1960s, the club's fortunes waned, and they were unable to recapture the success of their early years. Relegations followed, but Bologna always managed to fight their way back to the top tier. In recent decades, the club has enjoyed moderate success, often finishing mid-table in Serie A and occasionally qualifying for European competitions. However, during the 2023/24 season, the Rosso-blu enjoyed a fairytale campaign which culminated in a 5th-placed finish in Serie A. As a result, Bologna will be playing Champions League football for the very first time this season.
