Founded in 1903 by three Basque students living in Madrid, Atlético began as a branch of Athletic Bilbao. However, it quickly forged its own identity, and by 1921, Atlético became an independent club. With their signature red and white stripes, Los Colchoneros (The Mattress Makers) have always been seen as the working-class team of Madrid, standing in contrast to their wealthier city rivals, Real Madrid.

The club’s early success came in the 1940s and 1950s, when they won their first La Liga titles under the guidance of manager Helenio Herrera, who would go on to become one of football’s most legendary tacticians. Atlético’s spirit of resilience was best embodied during these decades as they fought through political and economic difficulties in post-war Spain to establish themselves as a powerhouse in Spanish football.

The 1960s and 1970s were golden years for Atlético, with domestic successes being complemented by a European Cup (now Champions League) final appearance in 1974. Although they lost to Bayern Munich in a heartbreaking replay, Atlético proved they could compete with Europe’s elite. Their status as a formidable team was solidified with several more domestic titles and European successes, including their first Europa League triumph in 2010 under manager Quique Sánchez Flores.

The arrival of Diego Simeone in 2011 marked a new chapter in the club’s history. Under the fiery Argentine, Atlético transformed into a modern powerhouse, winning La Liga in 2014 and 2021, alongside two Europa League titles. Simeone’s “Cholismo” philosophy, built on hard work, teamwork, and tactical discipline, became synonymous with the club’s identity. They also reached two Champions League finals under his leadership, narrowly losing both to their city rivals, Real Madrid.
