3 of the Best Supercoppa Italiana Matches of All-Time

The Supercoppa Italiana has delivered countless thrilling encounters, showcasing the drama and passion of Italian football at its finest. From last-minute winners to breathtaking comebacks, this annual showdown – which was once held between Serie A champions and Coppa Italia holders and is now a four-team tournament – never fails to excite. Over the years, the competition has produced unforgettable moments that remain etched in football history. So, here are three of the best Supercoppa Italiana matches.

1) Supercoppa Italiana 2017: Lazio 3-2 Juventus

The 2017 Supercoppa Italiana delivered a pulsating contest as Lazio edged out Juventus 3-2 in a dramatic clash at the Stadio Olimpico. The game had everything a football fan could wish for—moments of brilliance, a late comeback, and a sensational last-gasp winner. Lazio struck first, with Ciro Immobile continuing his prolific form. The forward was brought down in the box by Gianluigi Buffon, and he coolly converted the resulting penalty in the 32nd minute to give the Biancocelesti the lead. The Roman side doubled their advantage early in the second half when Immobile soared above the Juventus defense to head home a beautifully weighted cross, making it 2-0 in the 54th minute.

Juventus, however, refused to go down without a fight. Paulo Dybala ignited the Bianconeri’s resurgence with a stunning free-kick in the 85th minute, curling the ball into the top corner to reduce the deficit. Moments later, Dybala was at it again, this time from the penalty spot, after Alex Sandro was fouled in the box. The Argentine’s composed finish leveled the game at 2-2 in the 91st minute, seemingly pushing the contest into extra time.

But Lazio had other ideas. In the dying moments, substitute Alessandro Murgia became the hero for the Roman faithful. In the 93rd minute, a swift counterattack led to Jordan Lukaku delivering a perfect cut-back into the box, and Murgia slotted home with precision to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory for Lazio. The win marked Lazio’s fourth Supercoppa Italiana triumph and their first since 2009. Immobile’s brace and Murgia’s heroics stole the headlines, while Juventus were left to rue their defensive lapses.

2) Supercoppa Italiana 2012: Juventus 4-2 Napoli (A.E.T)

The 2012 Supercoppa Italiana in Beijing offered football fans a rollercoaster of emotions as Juventus outlasted Napoli 4-2 in a gripping contest that required extra time. The match was as much about thrilling goals as it was about controversy, making it a showdown to remember.

Napoli started on the front foot, showing no signs of intimidation against the reigning Serie A champions. Edinson Cavani opened the scoring in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot home after an excellent pass from Marek Hamšík. Juventus, however, responded swiftly. Kwadwo Asamoah, making his competitive debut for the Bianconeri, unleashed a thunderous volley from the edge of the box to level the score just ten minutes later.

Napoli regained their advantage shortly before halftime. Goran Pandev latched onto a through ball and delivered a sublime chip over Gianluigi Buffon, leaving Juventus trailing 2-1 at the break. In the second half, Juventus ramped up the pressure. Arturo Vidal’s coolly converted penalty in the 74th minute, following a foul on Vučinić, which brought the sides level once again. With no further goals in regular time, the match headed into extra time, but the drama was far from over.

Controversy struck early in extra time when Napoli’s Pandev and Zúñiga were sent off for dissent and a reckless challenge, respectively. Manager Walter Mazzarri was also dismissed, leaving Napoli undermanned and unsettled. Juventus seized the opportunity to pounce. An own goal by Napoli’s Christian Maggio, following Claudio Marchisio's dangerous cross, gave Juventus a 3-2 lead in the 97th minute. Mirko Vučinić sealed the victory four minutes later, calmly finishing off a quick counterattack to make it 4-2.

Juventus lifted their fifth Supercoppa Italiana, celebrating their triumph amid the drama that had unfolded. While Napoli fans voiced frustration over the officiating, Juventus showcased their resilience and depth, with Asamoah and Vučinić playing pivotal roles.

3) Supercoppa Italiana 2006: Inter Milan 4-3 Roma (A.E.T)

The 2006 Supercoppa Italiana was an end-to-end affair that lived up to the hype, as Inter Milan edged AS Roma 4-3 after extra time in a thrilling contest at San Siro. Roma dominated the first half, racing to a three-goal lead that left Inter shell-shocked. The scoring began in the 18th minute when Amantino Mancini capitalized on Inter’s defensive lapse, coolly slotting the ball past Francesco Toldo. Things went from bad to worse for the Nerazzurri as Alberto Aquilani netted a brilliant brace, first with a thunderous strike in the 26th minute and then a composed finish in the 34th. At 3-0, it seemed like Roma were cruising to their second Supercoppa title.

However, the Nerazzurri had other ideas. Patrick Vieira sparked the comeback in the 44th minute with a towering header from a Luis Figo free-kick, giving the hosts a glimmer of hope heading into halftime. The second half saw Inter grow in confidence, relentlessly pushing forward. Hernán Crespo narrowed the deficit further in the 65th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing it past a helpless Doni. Roma’s lead now looked precarious, and Inter’s belief was palpable. In the 74th minute, Vieira struck again, rising above Roma’s defenders to meet a perfectly placed corner from Figo, leveling the score at 3-3 and sending San Siro into raptures. The momentum had shifted entirely, and the Nerazzurri seemed destined to complete their incredible turnaround.

With neither side able to find a winner in regulation, the match headed into extra time. The decisive moment came in the 95th minute when Luis Figo capped off a masterclass performance. The Portuguese maestro weaved past defenders before unleashing a precise strike into the net, sealing Inter’s victory and breaking Roma hearts. Inter’s triumph not only marked their second consecutive Supercoppa Italiana win but also underscored the resilience of Roberto Mancini’s side. Patrick Vieira’s heroic debut, Figo’s brilliance, and a never-give-up spirit etched this match into the annals of Italian football history as one of its greatest comebacks.
