After a decade of lighting up North London, Son Heung-min’s time at Tottenham might be nearing its end. The South Korean star has been linked with a summer move away from Spurs — and not just to the Saudi Pro League, but now also to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, who are under the leadership of his former boss, José Mourinho.
According to respected Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Son and Mourinho recently had a face-to-face meeting, and the 32-year-old forward is said to be open to the idea of playing under the Portuguese manager once again. Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Fenerbahçe are prepared to offer Son a hefty €12 million per year, a tempting deal for a player entering the final stretch of his career.
Son’s connection with Mourinho runs deep. The pair worked together at Spurs from 2019 to 2021, during which time Son scored 29 goals and registered 25 assists in 70 appearances. Their strong relationship could play a key role if Son does decide to make the move to Istanbul.
At the same time, the lure of Saudi Arabia hasn’t gone away either. Reports suggest Spurs have already agreed to a £25 million deal with an unnamed Saudi club, which adds another layer of intrigue to Son’s future.
Since joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son has become one of the most beloved figures in club history. With 173 goals in 454 appearances, he’s not just been a consistent performer, but a symbol of loyalty and passion. This season, he captained Spurs to their long-awaited Europa League triumph, ending a 17-year trophy drought and delivering the club’s first major European honour since 1984.
However, there’s no denying that things have shifted. Son turns 33 in July, and after battling injuries throughout the campaign, he found himself starting on the bench in some big matches — including the Europa League final. His influence, while still significant, has gradually waned.
With Thomas Frank now officially appointed as the new Spurs boss, Son is expected to meet with him in the coming weeks to discuss his next move. Those talks could determine whether he stays for the final year of his contract — which runs until 2026 — or if he takes up a new challenge abroad. If he does decide to leave, Son would be bowing out at the highest point possible. Lifting a European trophy as captain, after ten unforgettable years at the club.
