Real Madrid Close In on Signing Trent Alexander-Arnold

Real Madrid are pushing to seal a deal for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, hoping to bring him in as a free agent this summer. The Spanish giants have had their eye on Alexander-Arnold for two years and have been working since January to convince him to make the switch at the end of the season. While no deal has been signed yet, Madrid will have to inform Liverpool as soon as it happens.

The 26-year-old’s contract at Anfield expires in June, meaning he’s been free to negotiate with overseas clubs since the start of 2025. Back in October, The Athletic reported that Madrid had made Alexander-Arnold a top priority, though an approach in January was turned down. He’s one of three major Liverpool players – alongside Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk – whose contracts run out this summer, leaving the club with big decisions to make.

According to reports, Madrid want Alexander-Arnold in time for the Club World Cup this summer. However, his Liverpool contract doesn’t officially expire until 15 days after the tournament kicks off. Madrid’s first game is against Al Hilal on June 18 in Miami. FIFA is allowing clubs participating in the Club World Cup to register new signings between June 1-10, with another opportunity to add two more players between 27th June and 3rd July. However, Madrid would need to negotiate with Liverpool if they want Alexander-Arnold available from the start.

"If they want him to play in the group stage of the Club World Cup, they are going to have to negotiate with Liverpool and come to some arrangement for him to be released early from his contract," said Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol. Liverpool’s season wraps up on 25th May against Crystal Palace, and Alexander-Arnold is also in contention to play for England against Andorra (7th June) and Senegal (10th June) before any potential move to Madrid.

Having risen through Liverpool’s academy, Alexander-Arnold has played 349 games for the club, scoring 22 goals and providing 87 assists. He was a key figure in Liverpool’s historic 2019-20 Premier League title win and earned the PFA Young Player of the Year award for his performances that season. Over his 19 years at the club, he’s also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. After Jordan Henderson’s departure in 2023, he was named Liverpool’s vice-captain under Jurgen Klopp, with Van Dijk taking over as captain. If this is the end of his Liverpool journey, it would mark the departure of one of the club’s most influential academy graduates in recent memory.
