Liverpool Seal €150m Deal for Florian Wirtz

After weeks of negotiations, rejected bids, and a whole lot of anticipation, it looks like Liverpool are finally set to land their marquee summer signing. The Reds have agreed to a jaw-dropping €150 million (£126.9m) deal with Bayer Leverkusen for star playmaker Florian Wirtz.

It’s a move that’s been brewing for a while, with both clubs deep in discussions. Leverkusen held firm from the start, demanding a total package of €150m — and Liverpool, after two previous attempts, have finally matched it. Now, talks are focused on the nitty-gritty: how the payments will be structured, what kind of add-ons will be involved, and when the medical can be arranged. While the initial part of the summer transfer window — the short one for Club World Cup player registration — has now closed, it reopens on June 16, giving both sides some breathing room to iron out the finer details.

But understandably, Liverpool fans are getting restless, wondering why it’s taking so long for the move to go through. David Ornstein of The Athletic provided some insight, saying, “The magnitude of the transfer, allied to Leverkusen not specifically needing a trade and Liverpool wanting to work within their parameters, explains why the parties are going into such detail over the situation and it is taking understandable time and patience to find a resolution.”

Wirtz, 22, reportedly turned down advances from Bayern Munich and saw Manchester City pull out of the race due to the hefty price tag. But Liverpool stayed in the hunt and are now on the brink of pulling off one of the biggest signings in their history. If everything goes through as expected, Wirtz’s transfer will shatter records. While the most expensive British club signing to date is Chelsea’s €121m swoop for Enzo Fernández, Liverpool will now blow past that figure — and come close to topping Barcelona’s €135m deal for Philippe Coutinho (ironically from Liverpool themselves) as the highest fee paid for a player involved with a British club.

But Wirtz isn’t the only one arriving at Anfield this summer. Arne Slot is wasting no time in reshaping the squad that won the Premier League in 2024/25. He’s already brought in Jeremie Frimpong — also from Leverkusen — who is expected to step into Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role after the England international’s high-profile switch to Real Madrid. Slot is also eyeing further reinforcements. Bournemouth’s promising left-back Milos Kerkez is reportedly close to joining the Reds, with negotiations said to be in the final stages.

With several high-profile names coming through the door, Liverpool and Arne Slot aren’t resting on their laurels. In fact, they have doubled down and strengthened their squad further, as they look to compete on all front next season.
