Atletico Madrid have struck a deal with Real Betis for the signing of highly-rated midfielder Johnny Cardoso, bringing an end to weeks of negotiations. The agreement is worth €30 million, with an extra €2 million in potential add-ons.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move with his trademark “Here we go!” writing, “Johnny Cardoso to Atlético Madrid, here we go! Deal agreed in principle for package in excess of €30m and five year contract ready for the midfielder since start of June. Final details being fixed today with Real Betis then Johnny will join Atlético.”
Cardoso, who represents the United States internationally but was born and raised in Brazil, has made a strong impression since his switch to La Liga from Internacional last year. In just two seasons at Real Betis, he established himself as a key figure in Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield because of his sharp reading of the game and consistent performances. The 23-year-old played 46 matches across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring four goals and adding one assist. His contribution helped Betis secure a sixth-place finish in La Liga and reach the Europa Conference League final.
Cardoso has built a reputation as one of La Liga’s standout defensive midfielders. His stats speak for themselves—averaging over two tackles, two interceptions, and nearly three clearances per game. With Atletico looking to refresh their midfield, especially with club captain Koke approaching the twilight of his career, Cardoso is seen as a long-term piece of the puzzle.
Diego Simeone has been eager to add depth in that area, especially after Atleti’s disappointing early exit from the Club World Cup. Now, The U.S. international is set to join an Atletico midfield already stacked with talent, including Conor Gallagher, Pablo Barrios, Marcos Llorente, and Rodrigo De Paul.
Cardoso’s desire to join Atletico played a big role in the move going through, especially with interest coming from several other European clubs. He reportedly had his heart set on the move to the Wanda Metropolitano from the start. And the transfer window may not be done for Atletico yet. Villarreal’s creative midfielder Alex Baena is also on their radar, while the club is eyeing reinforcements at left-back, with names like Andrew Robertson, Lucas Digne, and Theo Hernandez all being linked.
