It's Official: Thomas Müller Set to Leave Bayern Munich After 17 Seasons

Thomas Müller and Bayern Munich – one of football’s most iconic partnerships – is coming to an end. After 17 glittering seasons with the Bavarian giants, Müller has confirmed he’ll leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old announced the news on social media, bringing clarity after weeks of speculation. And while the decision didn’t come from him, Müller handled it with the grace and loyalty he’s always shown in red. “Hello Bayern fans,” he wrote. “After a lot of speculation about me recently, I would like to use this letter to provide you with an opportunity to clarify things. Even after all these years, regardless of the minutes I play, I still really enjoy being on the pitch with the boys and fighting for titles together for our colors. I could have easily imagined myself in this role next year as well.

“However, the club has consciously decided not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season. Even if this was not in line with my personal wishes, it is important that the club follows its convictions. I respect this step, which the board and supervisory board certainly did not take lightly... Now, my full focus is on our sporting goals for the season. It would be a dream for me to bring the championship trophy back home and reach the long-awaited final at home at the end of May. I will give everything for that! Thank you for everything that has been and for everything that is still to come.”

Müller has racked up 743 appearances and 247 goals for Bayern since breaking into the first team back in 2008. A product of the club’s youth academy, he’s been a constant presence in one of football’s most dominant dynasties. From Bundesliga titles to European glory, Müller has done it all – and with his own unique flair. Twelve Bundesliga titles, including an astonishing streak of 11 in a row from 2012 to 2023. Two Champions League wins – in 2013 and again in 2020. And in total, 32 major trophies with Bayern. Muller is the true definition of a one-club legend.

Even this season, playing more of a supporting role under Vincent Kompany, Müller has chipped in with five goals and five assists across 36 appearances. He may not be the guaranteed starter he once was, but his influence and football brain are still priceless. Müller also hung up his boots on the international stage after Germany’s exit from Euro 2024, bowing out with 131 caps and 45 goals and a World Cup winner as well as one of the national team’s all-time greats.

Though he’s leaving Bayern, he hasn’t said anything about retiring. So, don’t be surprised if we see Müller pop up in a new jersey next season. Saudi Arabia? MLS? Time will tell. For now, though, the story isn’t quite over. He’s got a few more chapters left to write in Munich and knowing Müller, he’ll be giving it everything until the final whistle.
