Tottenham have begun early talks with Brentford over a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, and the timing couldn’t be better. The Cameroonian winger is reportedly more open to a move now that Thomas Frank — the man who helped turn him into a Premier League star — is in charge at Spurs.
Spurs officially unveiled Frank as their new head coach on Thursday, and it didn’t take long for the club to ramp up their interest in one of his most trusted players. Mbeumo was Frank’s go-to man at Brentford, and the numbers back it up — 20 goals and 7 assists in the league last season, a career-best return. Naturally, reuniting with the coach who got the best out of him is an appealing prospect. Manchester United, however, aren’t backing off just yet. They’ve already had a bid rejected — a package worth £45 million upfront plus £10 million in bonuses — and are reportedly preparing another offer. Mbeumo is believed to still favor United at this stage, but Spurs’ entry into the race — especially with Frank at the helm — could change things.
There’s a strong sense within Brentford that Mbeumo deserves a big move this summer, provided someone meets their asking price, which is said to be north of £60 million. That figure hasn’t scared off either of the two English giants, both of whom are looking to refresh their attacking lines after underwhelming seasons. Spurs, though, hold a key advantage — Champions League football. Despite finishing below their usual standards, the Europa League winners still managed to secure a seat at Europe’s top table, something United can’t offer. That could be a decisive factor, especially for a player looking to make the next big leap in his career.
It’s also worth noting just how deep the Mbeumo-Frank connection runs. Only Christian Nørgaard has made more appearances under Frank than Mbeumo’s 242, in which the winger scored 70 goals and chipped in with 51 assists. That kind of trust and familiarity could tip the balance in Spurs' favor.
Interestingly, before Postecoglou’s sacking, Tottenham were also actively pursuing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo — another player on United’s radar. With the managerial change, Mbeumo now seems to have jumped to the front of their wishlist. All in all, this is shaping up to be a gripping transfer battle. United might still be in the lead, but with Thomas Frank pulling the strings in north London, Spurs have every reason to believe they can land their man.
