Atletico Madrid Turn to Andy Robertson After Theo Hernandez Talks Stall with AC Milan

Atletico Madrid are circling Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, with the Scottish left-back now firmly on their radar as a possible summer signing.

With Robertson heading into the final year of his contract and fresh competition looming at Anfield, this could be a pivotal moment in his Liverpool career. Reports suggest the Reds are close to landing Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, which would shake up the pecking order in defence. The writing might be on the wall for Robertson, who has been a mainstay under Jurgen Klopp but now faces the prospect of being rotated or even replaced.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Robertson is open to the idea of a switch to Spain, and early discussions with Atletico have already begun. The Athletic's David Ornstein and Romano have both described the Scot as a “top target” for Diego Simeone’s side. That sentiment has since been echoed by other respected voices, including Paul Joyce of The Times.

It’s understood Atletico are looking for a dependable and experienced figure to anchor the left side of their defense, especially with Cesar Azpilicueta expected to move on after the Club World Cup and uncertainty around Reinildo’s future. Javi Galan was the most-used left-back in La Liga last season for Atleti, but the club clearly wants to strengthen in that area – and Robertson now looks to be their preferred choice over Theo Hernandez of AC Milan.

Why are Liverpool open to selling Robertson?

From Liverpool’s perspective, the situation presents a tricky decision. They’ve reportedly brought Kerkez in to compete with Robertson, not necessarily replace him outright. But if Atletico come in with a tempting offer, and with Robertson potentially eyeing a fresh challenge, a summer exit can’t be ruled out.

Speaking after Scotland’s recent internationals, Robertson was asked about his future. "We have discussed it, of course we have," he told Sky Sports. "You know the club have been... we've had good discussions with me and the club but what the future holds I am not sure. I know the position I am in and I have only got a year left and a lot is getting spoken about and getting said but my full focus is, you know, focusing on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids.” He added further, "Then I will try to come back in the best possible shape for pre-season and then we'll see what the future holds when these decisions come."

If Robertson does make the switch to Madrid, it could see Kostas Tsimikas stay put as Liverpool’s backup left-back – a role he may have had to relinquish had both Robertson and Kerkez stayed. Liverpool also have young talents like Owen Beck, Luke Chambers, and Calum Scanlon coming through the academy, so Arne Slot won't be short of options. For now, though, nothing is final – but it’s clear that Robertson’s future is far from settled. And as one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers in recent years, his potential departure would mark the end of an era at Anfield.
